I think Cheryl brings out excellent points. This a fast growing issue. It is a multi-billion dollar industry.
I was reading other day that total number of people in "slavery" now a days a the largest ever. Even in USA.
Cheryl you are indeed doing a great service to humanity and should spearhead this movement to eradicate modern silent slavery. With your legal background and spiritual activism, nobody better than you

What a great post this is. I have shared it with a bunch of my groups on LinkedIn and on Facebook as well as I think it points out the REAL COST OF COUNTERFEITING. I have friend in Thailand who has done a lot of anticounterfeiting work there and the stories he can tell about the use of child labor in Thailand in the manufacture of counterfeits would stand your hair on end (of course, most of the girls might be lucky to end up in factories; most of them end up in child prostitute houses). Please don't buy counterfeit goods!

It is very easy to register your work on-line with the new system. Even I was able to figure it out the first time. On the phone the copyright office isn't so great, but someone working there did set-up a good working system to upload images.

This article is so important for the literally hundreds of artists that don't understand why copyrights are important. Well written, useful information. Thank you for this - I'll be tweeting it and referring it to all of my artist colleagues!

Dear Maria:

Common phrases can be protected if used for particular goods and services. A great slogan can be a very strong way of messaging the brand. Great example: "Just have it your way" Who do you think of?

Your comments are appreciated!

Apparently she did, enough to get approved by the TM office. There's quite a bit at her site.

Hope all is well!

It's silly for any entity to be able to own commonly used phrases. I've been using that phrase for decades, long before I ever heard Oprah use it. I learned it from my parents, who used that phrase probably before Oprah's show ever existed.

There's a great article written about this very topic by writer Leo Baubouta, who was sent a letter from an author's attorney to stop using the phrase "feel the fear and do it anyway" becuase it was the name of a tm book title.

His argument is that it's a commonly used phrase, and if we start tm language that's used everyday, things can get really silly.

Check out his argument here: http://zenhabits.net/2009/04/feel-the-fear-and-do-it-anyway-or-the-privatization-of-the-english-language/
