London Abuzz Over New Logo Design for Olympics

On my visit to London two weeks ago, London’s media was awash in stories and scandal over the new logo designed for the 2012 Olympic games, at the cost of a mere 400,000 pounds (over $800,000 for us Yanks).  You can see it here.It seems nearly everyone hates the new logo, and the controversy surrounded having award the expensive contract to a corporate firm instead of a young team of designers. Some of the I headlines read include: “The Olympic Logo Revolt”, “Olympics Logo Triggers Epilepsy” and “Dose of Derision for London.” The Brits seem to take these things quite seriously. I must confess, even though I’m American, I can’t quite figure out the darned logo either—you’ll have to decide for your self!

Since the new logo is likely to be spread round the world in due course, we’ll all have to get used to it - for better or worse.

The moral of the story: When designing your new trademark or logo, make certain you select your design team wisely and don’t be delusional. In the end, it’s the public that will let you know whether it’s a hit or a miss!
